Carefully review how perdiem rules changes after 2017 have impacted your Federal and State returns.

2018 Federal Taxes - read below for eligibility

2018 State Taxes - some states allow deductions, read below

After 2017, your ability to deduct per diem expenses has changed and we continue to advise consultation with your tax professional to discuss how these new rules affect you.  In general, if you are self employed you may still be able to benefit from perdiem deductions, while as an employee this option is no longer available in most cases on your federal return.  That being said, it is always in your best interest to log your overnights to prove your company provided perdiem reimbursement is tax exempt.

Some states allow for itemized deductions not available on federal returns.  This is not a heavily researched area yet, but we have reports from users in the following states that have found perdiem deductions useful on their state tax returns. Check with your tax professional for specific state information as rules and individual situations make it difficult to generalize an answer for perdiem deductions.

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Minnesota
  • Mississippi
  • New York
  • Pennsylvania
